Nature of social growth of adolescents in a democratic culture. Content and procedures in social studies. Development of instructional materials and techniques.

Prerequisite(s): EDSC 321 ; admission to secondary education program.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. develop an understanding of the place of social studies education in the school curriculum by creating lesson plans and units.
2. create an environment of inquiry in the social studies classroom by implementing deliberative discussions with high involvement (e.g., philosophical chairs).
3. demonstrate a variety of appropriate teaching models and strategies by preparing, implementing, and assessing social studies instruction (e.g., choice curriculum).
4. use the events and records of everyday events by capturing multiple voices and perspectives of social studies as it unfolds in time (e.g., oral history).
5. apply Common Core State Standards and social studies content standards by integrating curriculum with standards through lessons and units.
