MUS 355 - Jazz Arranging I (3 units) Analysis of the jazz harmonic idiom as applied to small group and big band jazz.
Prerequisite(s): MUS 254 or MUS 256 .
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall - Even Years
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate a thorough knowledge of instruments used in a jazz setting, including instrument range, transposition, timbre, technical strengths and limitations. 2. utilize proper notation and scoring techniques for arranging in small jazz group setting. 3. discuss and express their creative ideas in developing small ensemble jazz arrangements. 4. arrange scores in 4 and 5 parts in preparation for big band section writing.
