SOC 333 - Religion And Society

Examines the nature and impact of diverse institutionalized and non-institutionalized religious movements on social life from a social-psychological perspective.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 101 SOC 101 .

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. analyze sociological theories that help explain how people become religious and how America developed into a very religiously-oriented society with comparatively high level of religious participation.
2. discuss New Religious Movements that developed in the 1960s and 1970s, and drew considerable attention from media and societal leaders, leading to efforts at social control of the new phenomena.
3. demonstrate understanding of diverse religions, leading to a comprehension of the many different religions and levels of religiosity around the world.
4. identify and discuss some of the basic principles of Islam, one of the major world religions, and how Muslims are treated in Western societies, including in America.
5. demonstrate understanding of and appreciation for the ethical principles advanced by various religions and religious movements as applied to the personal and collective practices of individuals and groups.
6. identify and analyze the ethical and philosophical underpinnings of various religions around the world as they are applied in diverse societal settings on a global scale.
7. demonstrate understanding of the ethical basis of competing religious philosophies as they make important distinctions in the relationship between collective beliefs and individual behavior.
