COM 760 - Communication Theory (3 units)
Survey of theoretical ideas, nature of theory, major communication theories and theories relevant to communication. Examines purpose of theory in communication research. Particular focus on theoretical approaches with engaged or critical orientations.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. identify and explain theories and theoretical approaches typical to and oriented to different epistemological and axiological commitments of the field.
2. synthesize and evaluate theories specific to communication contexts or problematics.
3. identify and explain engaged theoretical approaches to the study of communication, including predictive, interpretive, and critical approaches.
4. analyze communication cases and apply appropriate theoretical frameworks in understanding those cases.
