JOUR 413 - Media History (3 units) CO13 Learn the historical context of today’s media landscape and the dynamic relationships between media institutions and political, cultural, socioeconomic, and technological change. Consider how worldview is influenced by media.
Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. integrate and synthesize core knowledge to analyze the complex ways media shape—and are shaped by—our understanding of history. 2. demonstrate a knowledge of scientific and technological advancements in media and mass communication and their impact on historical and modern societies. 3. differentiate among and integrate information from primary and secondary sources in order to evaluate them as sources of evidence for media history. 4. demonstrate the ability to effectively design and produce professional level multimedia communication dealing with an original research question related to the history of journalism and/or strategic communication.
