MUS 441 - Choral Music Methods

Organization of choral ensembles in middle schools and high schools; materials, standard choral literature, and rehearsal techniques.

Prerequisite(s): MUS 105; successful completion of Praxis I Core Academic Skills for Educators exam. Corequisite(s): Enrollment in Concert Choir, Symphonic Choir, or Chamber Chorale.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. sing and teach a variety of warm ups, songs, pieces, and activities appropriate for a choral music program between grades 6-12.
2. demonstrate knowledge of the multiple facets of a choral program (e.g. repertoire selection, rehearsing, designing warm ups, concert programming, and handbooks) through discussions, writing assignments, and projects.
3. create and implement clearly written, age-appropriate lesson plans intended for use in the choral classroom.
4. apply best practices for this specialty to lesson writing, teaching, and reflection.
5. reflect upon and assess their own and other’s teaching and learning through discussions and assignments.
