NRES 401 - Sustainable Recreation Use of Public Lands

(3 units) CO14
Legislation, philosophies, policies, goals and objectives, challenges and strategies related to the management of public lands utilized for outdoor recreation and tourism.  The natural resource agencies involved in public land management, current issues and trends, the impacts of recreation activities on soil, water, plants, and wildlife and the efforts to mitigate these effects will be explored.

Prerequisite(s): Junior or Senior standing, NRES 210 , NRES 217

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe the historical events and contributions of key individuals that have led to the current status of public land resources utilized for outdoor recreation and associated management agencies.
2. identify the types and locations of public lands in the U.S.
3. summarize the roles and responsibilities of federal and state agencies involved in public land management, including management philosophies, objectives, priorities, practices, and planning frameworks/approaches.
4. discuss current and potential future challenges related to the management of public lands for sustainable outdoor recreation use.
5. complete a project that addresses a specific need or issue related to outdoor recreation on public lands and communicate their findings effectively using both written and oral formats.
