PHYS 301 - Mathematical Methods for Physics (3 units) Applications of mathematics frequently used in physics, including vector calculus, tensors, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and complex analysis.
Prerequisite(s): MATH 283 .
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. set up and solve problems related to convergence of infinite series and or sequences. 2. set up and solve problems related to the expansion of function in an interval of conver-gence. 3. set up and solve problem involving linear systems of equations including eigenval-ue/eigenvector problems and the diagonalization of matrices. 4. use partial differentials to set up power series in two variables, solve max / min problems with constraints and differentiate integrals. 5. solve multiple integral problems such as surface and volume integrals; use the Jacobian to change the variables of integration. 6. set up and solve problems related to vector calculus and it’s to application to fields, gradient, divergence and curl.
