AGSC 230 - Principles of Horticulture (3 units) This course focuses on the ecological components of horticultural systems relevant to arid and semi-arid regions, and studies the core principles and concepts associated with production practices.
Prerequisite(s): BIOL 190A or CHEM 122A and CHEM 122L .
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 2 Units of Laboratory/Studio: 1 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. define the role of biotic and abiotic components of sustainable horticultural production. 2. discuss the importance of horticultural production under the framework of food security. 3. identify the constraints to horticultural production in arid and semi-arid regions around the world. 4. formulate solutions to the challenges of horticultural production in arid and semi-arid regions. 5. identify several horticultural crops important to the Nevada horticultural sector. 6. devise management alternatives for sustainable production of horticultural crops. 7. assess the tradeoffs of food production, environmental stewardship and community well being associated with horticultural production.
