SOC 456 - Life, Death, and Sex: Social Demography (3 units) CO13 Examines the influences of demography (births, deaths, and mobility) on socioeconomic and political structures. Several topics covered affecting national and international populations such as race/ethnicity, births, deaths, gender, family, socioeconomic opportunities, poverty, aging, immigration, migration, urbanization, and environment. Links between these trends, policy, and well-being are established.

Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing; SOC 101 ; completion of one introductory statistics course (APST 207 or APST 270 or ECON 262 or PSY 210 or SOC 210 or STAT 152 or STAT 352 ).
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. utilize demographic measures and concepts to examine and interpret data about an identified population using appropriate quality data sources. 2. develop and design appropriate steps and tasks to conduct a demographic research project based on an identified population. 3. write and present the results of a demographic study. 4. describe and discuss patterns related to population, fertility, migration, social inequality, health, and mortality within the United States and international populations.
