COM 741 - Rhetoric of the Body

(3 units)
This course examines how the body operates as a rhetorical phenomenon, investigates the presentation of bodies in discourse and media, and critiques ways of categorizing bodies. The course engages and evaluates different critical and humanistic theories about the body and discusses such topics as disability, sexuality, gender, Illness, mortality, and normalization.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. explain prominent rhetorical theories of the body.
2. apply rhetorical theories of the body in their own scholarship.
3. evaluate various rhetorical theories of the body.
4. identify ways social practices construct, legitimate, and privilege certain bodies.
5. critique systems that rhetorically marginalize select bodies.
