COM 770 - Communication and Justice

(3 units)
Surveys how experiences, environment, and context interact with communication to impact social and legal justice outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations. Emphasis is placed on understanding how trauma and bias manifest in both legal (e.g., courts) and non-legal (e.g., workplace) settings, as well as how they can impact communication, communication strategies, and justice outcomes across ecologies.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. compare and contrast law and justice as distinct but related concepts.
2. outline the three conditions of trauma-responsive justice.
3. explain the nature and potential impact of implicit social cognition in decision-making.
4. identify promising strategies for communicating with injured or vulnerable populations.
5. demonstrate understanding of crisis/conflict communication principles in high-stakes and high-stress contexts (e.g., legal settings, social movements).
