ENG 411C - Theories of Morphology

Primary topics of the class: assumptions, units of analysis, and representational models of theoretical frameworks in morphology; complications with defining ‘word’ cross-linguistically; internal organization of words; organization of words into paradigms; the relationship of word structure to sentence and sound structure; the range of cross-linguistic variation in word structure; and the connection between cross-cultural variation and variation in word structure.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 281  or ENG 282  or ENG 412A  /ENG 612A. ENG 412A  is strongly recommended.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. assess and analyze linguistic problems in morphological structure in English and in a variety of other languages.
2. apply morphological principles and theories to language data from English and a variety of other languages.
3. demonstrate and synthesize advanced knowledge and skills in morphological theory and analysis.
4. explain and illustrate the scientific process as it applies to the analysis of language data.
5. demonstrate how insights from morphology inform problems of societal concern.
