ESL 109 - English for Academic Purposes I

This course helps undergraduate international students develop academic English language & study skills in order to participate in university-level courses & produce coherent academic writing. Students practice listening, reading, writing, speaking, & increasing their active academic vocabulary. Integrated skill development helps students acquire critical thinking skills, note-taking strategies, & the ability to produce presentations and writing appropriate for a university classroom.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. use previewing strategies to increase reading and listening comprehension.
2. identify the main idea and specific details in a text or lecture on an academic topic.
3. apply reading strategies, such as skimming and scanning, to identify key information in academic texts.
4. take and use organized notes and annotations to understand and analyze academic material.
5. write clear, well-developed, coherent paragraphs that reflect academic writing conventions.
6. develop a clear, well-organized essay by revising multiple drafts.
7. quote and paraphrase other writers and speakers, using the direct and indirect speech.
8. revise and edit own writing to produce texts that use correct sentence structure, subject-verb agreement, and consistent verb tense.
9. correctly format academic writing according to chosen conventions (MLA, APA, etc.).
10. apply listening strategies to comprehend and check understanding of short talks, interviews, and discussions.
11. actively participate in group discussions, stating and supporting opinions, asking for and giving clarification, and working toward consensus.
12. summarize and build upon others’ ideas in discussions.
13. intentionally incorporate new academic vocabulary in writing and discussions.
14. give a clear, well-organized presentation on an academic topic.
