ESL 201 - English for Academic Purposes 2

(1 to 6 units)
Course gives undergraduate international students an opportunity to develop academic English language & study skills needed to succeed in university courses without English language support. Students practice discourse skills & basic research skills, develop genre awareness of typical academic writing tasks, improve their listening comprehension & notetaking skills, & increase their active academic vocabulary.

Maximum units a student may earn: 6

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. identify the main idea and specific details in a text or lecture on an academic or technical topic.
2. apply reading strategies to academic texts of increasing difficulty, identifying an author’s viewpoint and specific details that support it.
3. take and use organized notes to understand and recall academic material.
4. compose a clear, well-organized essay with a thesis that responds fully and appropriately to the assignment.
5. conduct basic research to identify credible and relevant sources.
6. write logical arguments based on sound reasoning that incorporate evidence from identified sources.
7. identify and utilize a variety of patterns of development and organization in written texts.
8. revise and edit own writing to produce texts that use correct sentence structure, agreement, and verb tense.
9. format academic writing according to chosen conventions correctly (MLA, APA, etc.).
10. apply listening strategies to comprehend and check understanding of academic lectures and videos.
11. actively participate in group discussions, encouraging others’ viewpoints, maintaining focus, and connecting new points to previously stated ideas.
12. summarize main ideas and opinions on passages of text or speech, and ask for and provide elaboration, clarification or explanation in a discussion.
13. incorporate new academic vocabulary in writing and discussions.
14. give a clear, well-organized presentation on an academic topic, demonstrating awareness of audience.
