CMPP 780 - Introduction to Human Population Genetics

(3 units)
The objective of this course is to provide students with an introduction to human genetic variation and what the approximate 5 million base pair differences between individuals potentially means in the context of human history, disease, and other human traits. What causes these differences will be examined along with the potential outcomes of this variation. This course would be a part A to a follow-up on population history and structure and the genetics of disease.

Maximum units a student may earn: 3

Prerequisite(s): Students will need complete undergraduate training in biology, preferably molecular biology, basic math and statistics.

Grading Basis: Graded
Units of Lecture: 2
Units of Discussion/Recitation: 1
Offered: Every Fall - Even Years

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. explain the basic concepts of molecular biology as it relates to genetic material and the central dogma.
2. understand the basics of population human genetics.
3. derive many of the quantitative principles underlying genome variation.
4. understand and detail concepts related to mutation, genetic drift, linkage, and recombination.
5. understand and explain concepts of natural selection.
