BCH 405 - Molecular Biology (3 units) Detailed exploration of the molecular structures and mechanisms involved in the storage, transmission, and utilization of genetic information in simple and complex organisms. Topics include nucleic acid structure and function, genome structure and organization, epigenetics, DNA replication, DNA damage and repair, recombination, transposition, mechanisms of gene expression (transcription, translation, processing, and regulation), molecular evolution, genomics, genetic engineering, and contemporary molecular biology tools, techniques, and applications in medicine and agriculture. Content will also include critical reading of primary literature and a discussion of ethical considerations.
Prerequisite(s): BCH 400 or BIOL 300 or BIOL 304
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall and Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. describe molecular mechanisms used to store, access and manipulate genetic information. 2. articulate an understanding of the roles of various macromolecules dealing with the storage and use of genetic information. 3. critically evaluate primary research literature and communicate an informed opinion of molecular research.
