ENG 298 - Writing about Literature

Introduction to literary study–literary terms, genres, time periods, and analysis.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 100  or ENG 101  or ENG 113  or Corequisite. Corequisite(s): ENG 102  or ENG 104  or ENG 114 .

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. analyze a broad range of specific literary genres (e.g., poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction) and historical periods (e.g., Early Modern, Romanticism, Naturalism).
2. employ literary terminology appropriate to the study of various genres.
3. write literary analyses and critical arguments based on close reading, using academic citation styles when appropriate.
4. articulate the relationships among authors, texts, and readers.
5. demonstrate an ability to use electronic and traditional resources for research and literary study.
6. analyze literature in relation to historical context, tracing trends in the representation of gender, race, and class.
