HIST 404C - Social Movements in the United States (3 units) CO12, CO13 Origins, tactics and impact of American social movements, with emphasis on conflicting notions of justice and the role of ordinary citizens in effecting social change.
Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain the ethical principles, belief systems, and social contexts that motivated different groups of Americans, at particular points in the nation’s history, to organize collectively and advocate social change. 2. analyze and synthesize primary, secondary, and cultural sources. 3. find and use historical scholarship and sources to answer a research question. 4. present ideas in a clear and persuasive manner both orally and in writing. 5. use relevant scholarship and historical evidence to articulate a theory of why and how social movements emerge, succeed, or fail.
