NURS 331 - Pathophysiology and Pharmacology I

Introduces basic principles of pathophysiology of select body systems and pharmacological management of common disease processes. Emphasis on safety and the nurses’ role in medication administration.

Prerequisite(s): Admission to Nursing major.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. examine the pathogenesis, progression of pathophysiology, presentation, and treatment of selected disease processes to provide safe care.
2. identify medication properties and nursing considerations for select disease processes to provide safe medication administration.
3. explore the use of herbs, vitamins and supplements to determine their potential interactions with prescribed therapies.
4. demonstrate the nurse’s role in management and administration of medications to ensure safe practice.
5. describe the effects of aging on the physiologic response to disease and the related pharmacologic interventions to provide safe care.
6. discuss the legal and regulatory nursing implications in safe medication administration.
