PSC 407C - Political Systems of Russia and East-Central Europe (3 units) CO13 This course will examine and compare the various political pathways traveled by former communist countries stretching from Poland and Hungary to the former Soviet Union. The comparisons of post-communist regimes will focus on political institutions, political economy, civil society, and political attitudes.
Maximum units a student may earn: 3
Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing; PSC 211 .
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring - Odd Years
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. identify and analyze the causes and effects of transitions from communism. 2. explain and critically assess hypotheses which purport to explain outcomes in the study of Russia and Central and Eastern Europe. 3. understand and discuss emerging trends in the politics, economy, and civil societies of Russia and Central and Eastern Europe. 4. conduct original research and write a research paper, integrating knowledge and skills gained from Core knowledge, demonstrating mastery of skills built in earlier coursework.
