SPA 201 - Introduction to Communication Disorders

Survey of the professions of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology with special attention paid to the ways in which persons with communication disorders experience intersecting systems of oppression and barriers to institutional access and justice.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate understanding of Code of Ethics and educational and licensure requirements for Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology.
2. discuss different work settings for and explain how legislations and regulation shape the scope of practice for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists in those work settings.
3. demonstrate introductory knowledge of normal communication processes as related to normal anatomy and physiology of speech, language and hearing mechanisms.
4. identify and explain legislative initiatives, and policy changes to address historical underrepresentation and barriers experienced by persons with communication impairments and other disabilities in the US.
5. demonstrate the ability to retrieve scholarly resources and incorporate them into written work utilizing APA format.
