HIST 289 - Introduction to the History of the Middle East (3 units) CO10, CO11 History of the Middle East from antiquity through the present with special emphasis on its political and cultural systems and the emergence of Islam.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. analyze and interpret primary sources about the Middle East with attention to content, historical and cultural context, genre, and language through class discussion and written assignments. 2. explain how society, culture, and politics in the Middle East have changed over time through discussion and written assignments. 3. describe the historical development of Islam and other religions of the Middle East and relate how this shaped the experiences and viewpoints of people across the region. 4. demonstrate knowledge about the impact of the region’s history on contemporary cultural, political, and religious values of diverse societies in different parts of the Middle East.
