GEOG 422 - Climate Solutions: Local to Global Perspectives (3 units) CO9, CO13 Broad exploration of current climate change. Emphasizes challenge of identifying and implementing appropriate societal responses. Includes surveys of mitigation, adaptation, and Earth system engineering.
Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain at a basic level, the scientific basis for contemporary climate change and describe the associated impacts on society and the environment. 2. analyze different proposed societal, scientific, and technological solutions (climate solutions) in terms of their benefits, costs, ethical considerations, and other societal challenges. 3. integrate effective composition and communications skills and critical analysis and use of information to evaluate and debate different climate solutions and positions originating within and outside of class (e.g., advocacy groups, governments, industries). 4. synthesize information and techniques from previous coursework across disciplines to propose and explore different combinations of climate solutions in various geographic and social contexts. 5. describe generally and provide specific examples of the ways the rate of climate change could be slowed or reversed through mitigation and geo-engineering and impacts lessened through adaptation. 6. illustrate key biophysical and social challenges associated with such climate solutions.
