SPA 331 - Neuroscience for Speech Pathology and Audiology

(3 units)
Neuro-anatomical/physiological bases of human communication and swallowing; higher cortical function; sensory, motor, and autonomic nervous systems; neurological development across the lifspan; principles of neuroplasticity.

Prerequisite(s): SPA 330 ; Speech Pathology and Audiology major.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. explain normal functional anatomy of the brain.
2. explain the physiology and anatomy of the motor and sensory systems (somatic, visual, auditory, and proprioception).
3. discuss neuromuscular control for normal speech and swallowing.
4. describe the brain circulatory mechanisms.
5. apply neuroscience to human behavior with special emphasis on speech, language, hearing, swallowing, and cognition in the study of speech language pathology and audiology.
