RST 407K - Comparative Religion and Politics

Explore what happens when political life mixes with issues of ultimate concern. By exploring how states have used, abused, or controlled religion (and vice-versa) we will try to come to an understanding of how these two powerful forces shape our lives. (PSC 407K and RST 407K are cross-listed; credit may be earned in one of the two.)

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. classify definitions and theories of religion and apply those to interpret political events.
2. evaluate successful religious-based political movements or parties.
3. appraise and argue for political methods for managing religious-based identities in the context of diversity and equity.
4. understand and describe some of the likely consequences of religious intervention in politics and vice-versa.
5. conduct original analysis using theoretical background from class on a religious-political movement relevant to their interests.
