ETS 350 - Race and the Law

(3 units) CO10, CO12
This course examines the complex interrelationships between the legal system and structural inequalities. Students will learn principles of critical race theory and apply them to traditional law school subjects including criminal law and procedure, contracts, property, torts, and civil procedure. The class will also explore racial stereotyping and racial profiling as they affect the law, the Constitution’s role in slavery, and reparations.

Maximum units a student may earn: 3

Prerequisite(s): GRI 103  or ETS 150  or Sophomore standing.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe the key experiences and issues confronted by one or more racialized groups within or outside the United States.
2. explain how ideas about racial difference are produced and perpetuated through political, economic, cultural, and social structures.
3. analyze various forms of political, economic, cultural, or social action aimed at ending racism and creating more equitable societies.
4. describe common law and basic legal concepts commonly contained in the first-year curriculum of law school.
5. explain what the concept of race is and communicate how the concept of race, particularly racial subordination, has been and continues to be inextricably intertwined with the American legal system.
