MUS 402 - Post Tonal Theory (3 units) CO14 The purpose of this course is to introduce analytic tools that are useful in composing and understanding a wide range of twentieth century music practices.

Prerequisitie(s): MUS 302 and MUS 300 , or instructor’s permission
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring - Odd Years
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. compose and analyze works using pitch-class set theory in this style. 2. compose and analyze works using transformational theory. 3. compose and analyze short pieces using twelve-tone composition techniques. 4. effectively communicate a given piece’s relationship to current and past trends based on analysis of its composition.
