THTR 203 - Lighting Design I (3 units) This introductory course combines theory and practice through research, discussion, and hands-on projects. Students learn to see light differently, develop design language, and explore lighting’s applications across performance contexts. The course covers both artistic conceptualization and technical execution, teaching students how lighting designers create theatrical spectacle through collaboration while fostering appreciation for light as a dynamic element in performance and daily life.

Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 2 Units of Laboratory/Studio: 1 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain the artistic and practical aspects of lighting design through written work, oral discussion, and project participation. 2. employ the analytical skills needed to read a script, research and communicate ideas and establish a design aesthetic. 3. recall and apply stage lighting terminology involved in theatrical lighting production planning and implementation methods. 4. communicate their design ideas and concepts through presentations of design images and design concept papers.
