JOUR 467 - Global Perspectives: Media, Sports, Society (3 units) CO14 This immersive course blends sports journalism with global culture. Students will cover live events, explore the host city, and report on the intersection of sports with art, fashion, and history. They’ll engage with professionals, produce multimedia stories, and analyze how sports media shapes identity.
Through hands-on assignments and multimedia projects, students will develop reporting skills, engage with professionals, and examine sports’ role in global culture. A key focus will be on analyzing how sports media shapes identity, particularly regarding class, race, and gender.
Maximum units a student may earn: 3
Prerequisite(s): Journalism majors; junior or senior standing; General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed and CO4-CO8 completed.
Grading Basis: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Summer
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. produce accurate, professional-quality journalism by effectively covering live events, conducting interviews, and crafting compelling narratives. 2. reflect on and articulate the impact of cultural context on storytelling and reporting approaches, with an emphasis on adapting to global journalism environments. 3. create cohesive journalistic pieces that integrate text, audio, video, and visual elements to enhance storytelling and audience engagement. 4. analyze and contextualize events, performances, or cultural phenomena to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the broader significance. 5. use social media platforms and other tools to deliver timely, engaging coverage that connects with audiences and fosters interaction.
