MICR 202 - Introduction to Biosafety and Biosecurity (3 units) CO9, CO12 Overview of biosafety and biosecurity in research and public health, emphasizing social responsibilities of scientists, ethical considerations, historical developments, safe work practices, and the rules and guidelines for handling biohazardous materials.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. define key concepts in biosafety and biosecurity. 2. explain the history and significance of biosafety and biosecurity in research and public health, and evaluate ethical implications of past and current practices. 3. identify biological hazards, assess their impacts on human health and environment, and evaluate ethical considerations in managing these hazards. 4. classify biological agents according to risk groups and describe the appropriate biological safety levels for different types of research. 5. develop risk assessments for biological agents and create response plans for biological incidents. 6. discuss the social responsibilities of scientists and institutions in preventing biological threats through the use of biosafety and biosecurity practices. 7. develop skills to effectively communicate biosafety and biosecurity information to diverse audiences including the general public. 8. identify and discuss emerging trends and challenges in biosafety and biosecurity, and analyze associated ethical responsibilities.
