THTR 202 - Scenic Design I (3 units) This course introduces the scenic design process, basic techniques and methods for creating two-dimensional renderings and three-dimensional models. Students will learn how scenic designers move from design meetings with the director and design team to a realized design onstage. Students will understand the purpose and importance of accurate representation of design ideas and details. Students will be introduced to basic scenic design considerations including sight lines, different types of theatrical spaces, and structural design.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. identify and discuss the principles of scenic design for the theatre, including collaboration, accommodation of creative expression, and visual metaphors. 2. integrate form with function, and the visually represent the emotional, intellectual and artistic themes of the play. 3. apply the fundamental technical skills required to the design processes needed for theatrical set design. 4. apply script analysis, planning, period and style research, graphic communication and visual expression of ideas and/or concepts into a design for the theatre. 5. explain how to use dramatic literature, drawn from a variety of periods and styles, as a vehicle for developing stage design.
