Integrated Elementary Teaching Program (Special Education, Early Childhood Education, English Language Acquisition and Development)

An undergraduate major is offered in Integrated Elementary Teaching. Completion of this program qualifies students for kindergarten-eighth grade elementary education teacher licensure from the Nevada Department of Education. Students must also select an emphasis area in one of the following: Special Education, Early Childhood Education, and/or English Language Acquisition and Development.

In order to apply to the Integrated Elementary Teaching Program (IETP)  , students must have completed at least 45 credits of college work with an overall grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale and have completed EDU 201 with a grade of “C”* or better. In addition, applications to the program require:

1. documentation of at least 30 hours of experience working with K-8 students in an educational setting under the supervision of a licensed professional who attests to the candidate’s potential to become a highly qualified teacher;
2. passing scores on all sections of the Praxis Core or CBEST;
3. a grade of “C” (not “C-“) or better in all education courses;
4. a grade of “C” (not “C-“) or better in all other courses required in the IETP.

Additional requirements associated with the application process can be obtained from the Student Advisement Center in the College of Education (WRB 2005). A specified number of students will be admitted into the various programs each semester, based on admission criteria and space available in the program.

EARNING A TEACHING LICENSE AT THE 7TH-12TH GRADE LEVEL 

Individuals who are seeking to earn a 7th-12th Grade Teaching License must enroll in the NevadaTeach Program, the PackTeach Program, or the Secondary Education Program depending on the content area they wish to teach. In general, the NevadaTeach Program serves students in Science and Mathematics related content areas, while the Secondary Education and PackTeach Programs are geared toward students interested in the humanities and other liberal arts content areas. Detailed information regarding these programs including the specific content areas included in each is shown below. 

Secondary Education

In order to apply for admission to the Secondary Teacher Education program, students must have completed at least 30 credits of college coursework with a grade point average of no less than 2.75 (on a 4-point scale) and have completed EDU 202 or the equivalent with a grade of “C” (not “C-“) or better. The 30 credits must include core requirements in English, math, and the sciences. In addition, applicants must have passed the Praxis Core in reading, writing and mathematics with a satisfactory score, established by the Nevada State Department of Education. 

Students who are admitted to the Secondary Education or PackTeach Teacher Prep Program must earn at least a “C” (not a “C-“) in Pedagogy I and at least a “B-” (not a “C”) in Pedagogy II and the methods course specific to their discipline.

Students must select major teaching fields from the list below. In general, it is expected students will choose their teaching fields during the sophomore year, although this decision may be made as early as the freshman year. Program descriptions for the major teaching fields listed below are included in this catalog.

NevadaTeach Program

The NevadaTeach Program prepares teachers for 7th-12th grade teaching licenses in a variety of STEM disciplines. The program is built on the premise that preservice teachers should have extensive field experiences in schools throughout the program. Additionally, each teaching candidate will complete a full degree in their content area as part of the required NevadaTeach coursework for their specific discipline. 

Freshman are initially enrolled as pre-NevadaTeach students and take early NevadaTeach courses which include a field component in the freshman year. In order to apply for Advanced NevadaTeach status, students must complete at least 40 credits of college coursework and complete NVTC 101. In addition, applicants must complete the Pre-Professional Skills Test (Praxis Core or CBEST) in reading, writing, and mathematics with a passing score as established by the Nevada State Department of Education.
