English (Language and Linguistics), Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs in the College of Liberal Arts

The minor in English Language and Linguistics complements many majors such as Anthropology, Speech Pathology, Philosophy, and World Languages by offering courses in general linguistics, phonetics and phonology, syntax, sociolinguistics, language and gender, and historical linguistics, along with courses in Old and Middle English.

In general, students will not be allowed to major AND minor in English. However, certain exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis. These must be officially approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies in English, in accordance with the following strictly predetermined list of combinations.

The minors the department offers can be grouped into “English” (all literature and writing) and “Linguistics” (Language and Linguistics and TESOL). Students may combine a major/minor in “English” and “Linguistics,” but cannot combine majors/minors from within either of these groups.

Students cannot apply any courses fulfilling major requirements toward the minor. Instead, they must complete 18 units of additional upper-division electives in English for their minor.
