The University of Nevada, Reno Department of Music provides education in the history, performance, theory, and pedagogy of music. Its mission is to help students acquire the skills and knowledge to enable them to successfully contribute as performers, scholars, and educators. To this end, and following the mission of the university as a whole, the department provides high quality, accredited, undergraduate and graduate degree programs in performance, education, and research. The department offers courses, ensembles, and concerts that reflect the diversity and richness of the world’s cultures, and maintains a learning environment where student performers and scholars may regularly interact with professional teacher/mentors.

NOTE: For all students entering the Bachelor of Music (Music Education) degree program, any grade of C- or lower in the coursework for the major must be repeated (courses may only be repeated once).

Student Learning Outcomes


Students will be able to:

  • perform on an instrument or voice at a semi-professional level
  • demonstrate mastery of basic musicianship skills (piano, rhythm, pitch discrimination).
  • demonstrate knowledge of basic musical arranging/composing concepts.
  • demonstrate the necessary professional/teaching skills in order to be successful in the classroom.

Students in this major must meet all Core Objectives (CO1 through CO14). Courses satisfying Core Objectives are designated (e.g., CO9) in General Catalog curricula and course descriptions.

An audition for admission in the student’s area of concentration is required prior to acceptance into this Department of Music program. For more information visit the Department website, or contact the Music Office.

B. Lower Division Applied Individual Instruction (8 units)


Applied music units must be on a single instrument or voice.

C. Upper Division Applied Individual Instruction (8 units)


Upper division barrier exam required. Applied music units must be on a single instrument or voice.

D. Piano Competency (0-4 units)


All students must pass the piano proficiency exam at least 1 full year prior to anticipated internship.

Vocal majors must take choral ensemble courses and instrumental majors must take band or orchestra courses in order to satisfy this requirement. Seven total units of Ensemble coursework is required (3 units are counted in the Core General Education Requirement above).

  • PRAXIS I Exam: Core Academic Skills for Educators (#5752) or CBEST (0 units)
  • PRAXIS Exam: Music Content & Instruction (#5114) (0 units)
  • PRAXIS Exam Principles of Learning and Teaching (#5622 or #5624), choose either K-6 or 7-12 version (0 units)

Prerequisites for supervised internship:

  • Completed a minimum of 30 units of college coursework
  • 2.74 overall GPA
  • Passing scores from either PRAXIS I or CBEST
  • Previous acceptance into the College of Ed Secondary Teacher Ed program

  • Substitute license, as needed

Piano Proficiency Exam - must be passed at least 1 full year prior to internship (Spring 4) at the latest.

PRAXIS II Exams - must be passed for name to be forwarded to Nevada State Department of Education for licensure

Applied study -

  • 100-level lower division applied study (8 units)

Major Ensemble -

  • if your instrument is voice, piano, or guitar, enroll in a choral ensemble (Concert Choir or Chamber Choir)
  • if your instrument is wind or percussion, enroll in an instrumental ensemble (Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, or Symphony Orchestra) One fall semester of Marching Band may be used as your major ensemble.
  • if your instrument is violin, viola, cello, or bass, enroll in Symphony Orchestra

Functional Piano ( MUS 109 , MUS 110 , MUS 209 , MUS 210 )

  • these courses are optional and depend upon your piano skills. They will prepare you for the piano proficiency exam. This preparation can also be done through applied study.

Barrier Exam - must be passed on major instrument to enroll in upper-division applied study. See your applied instructor regarding the contents of the exam.

Applying to the College of Education Teacher Preparation Program - acceptance required to enroll in EDSP 411 , EDSC 483
