The Department of World Languages and Literatures offers a program of graduate study leading to the degree of Master of Arts in World Languages and Literatures, with a specialization in Spanish.

Program Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes
The mission of the graduate program in Spanish is to educate students in the language, cultures, linguistics, and literatures of the Spanish-speaking world at the highest possible level, to provide students with a broad knowledge base from which to pursue more specialized studies, and to offer a depth of experience in scholarship that will advance their future professional activities. The department’s excellent placement record attests to its commitment to the intellectual and professional formation of its graduate students.
Admission Requirements
In addition to meeting university and graduate school requirements, applicants must possess:
- a BA degree (or equivalent) in Spanish, or a BA degree (or equivalent) in a related field and 18 semester credits in upper-division courses in the language; and
- a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 (or equivalent) in undergraduate Spanish courses.

I. Program Requirements
The program offers two tracks:
- Thesis track (30 credits),
- At least 18 credits, including six thesis credits, must be in 700-level courses. If a minor is approved, at least six graduate credits are required in the minor area.
- Non-thesis track (30 credits),
- At least 15 credits must be in 700-level courses. No thesis is required. If a minor is approved, a minimum of nine graduate credits are required in the minor area.
Although a minor is not required, students may elect to include a minor field of specialization, which must be approved by the student’s advisory-examining committee.

II. Total Units
Thesis: 30 graduate units.
Non-Thesis: 30 graduate units.
