Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs in the College of Liberal Arts

The philosophy minor with an ethics, law, and politics concentration exposes students to the rigorous analysis of ethical, political, and legal values and their concrete implications. Students pursuing careers in law, political science, medicine, and other public-facing professions will benefit from this minor’s emphasis on rigorous argument reconstruction and critical investigations of the real-world ramifications of theory.

Students majoring in another field may minor in philosophy by completing the requirements outlined below for the philosophy ethics, law, and politics minor. Philosophy majors may not use either philosophy minor to fulfill their minor requirement.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • State a thesis about a philosophical problem or text, explain the thesis, and provide evidence and argument (including replies to counter-arguments) in its defense.
  • Distinguish better and worse reasoning, and recognize relevant logical relationships and patterns of inference.
  • Show what is at stake in an abstract debate, historical or contemporary, and indicate how a philosophical view might have concrete implications or make a difference in theory or practice.
