World Languages and Literatures (French Specialization), M.A.

The Department of World Languages and Literatures offers a program of graduate study leading to the degree of Master of Arts in World Languages and Literatures, with a specialization in French.

Program Learning Outcomes


Students will be able to:

  • discuss the concepts and theories that allow the integration of knowledge attained in various subfields of French and Francophone studies.
  • conduct original research and demonstrate applied critical writing and communication skills appropriate to a range of academic, community, and professional settings.
  • find professional employment in their specialty (e.g., as K12 French teachers) or, alternatively, apply successfully to doctoral programs in French and Francophone studies and related disciplines at any university in the United States.

Admission Requirements


In addition to meeting University and Graduate School requirements, applicants must possess:

  1. a B.A. degree (or equivalent) in French, or a B.A. degree (or equivalent) in a related field and 18 semester credits in upper-division courses in the language; and
  2. a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 (or equivalent) in undergraduate French courses.

I. Program Requirements (30 units)


General requirements:

  • Students pursuing an M.A. in French complete 30 units of graduate coursework.
  • All M.A. students are required to take some portion of the coursework at the 700-level or above.
  • All students are additionally required to demonstrate reading proficiency in an approved language other than French and English. Visit https://www.unr.edu/world-languages/graduate-program/language-requirement for more information on the reading proficiency requirement. 
  • Although a minor is not required, students may elect to include a minor field of specialization, which must be approved by the student’s advisory-examining committee.

A. World Languages and Literatures Core Courses (6 units)


All World Languages and Literatures graduate students must complete the following courses at the earliest opportunity.

B. French and Francophone Studies Core Courses (18 units)


All students must take 6 units of coursework each in a) Modern French and Francophone Studies, b) Contemporary French and Francophone Studies, and c) French Applied Linguistics.

C. Integrative Project (6 units)


FREN 797 is offered every fall, spring, and summer. Students may choose to enroll in the course over two consecutive semsters in their final year or to enroll in 6 credits in their final summer term.

II. Total Units (30 units)


30 graduate units.
