World Languages and Literatures (Spanish Specialization), M.A.

The Department of World Languages and Literatures offers a program of graduate study leading to the degree of Master of Arts in World Languages and Literatures, with a specialization in Spanish.

Program Learning Outcomes


Students will be able to:

  • successfully complete a Ph.D. program or another advanced degree (M.D., J.D., etc.).
  • secure a teaching position at an educational institution.
  • improve their standing within the institutions in which they may already be employed.
  • pursue any career (for example, in foreign service with the State department) in which deep knowledge of Spanish and/or Hispanic cultures is a valuable asset.

Admission Requirements


In addition to meeting university and graduate school requirements, applicants must possess:

  1. a BA degree (or equivalent) in Spanish, or a BA degree (or equivalent) in a related field and 18 semester credits in upper-division courses in the language; and
  2. a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 (or equivalent) in undergraduate Spanish courses.

I. Program Requirements


The program offers two tracks:

  • Thesis track (30 credits),
    • At least 18 credits, including six thesis credits, must be in 700-level courses. If a minor is approved, at least six graduate credits are required in the minor area.
  • Non-thesis track (30 credits), 
    • At least 15 credits must be in 700-level courses. No thesis is required. If a minor is approved, a minimum of nine graduate credits are required in the minor area.

Although a minor is not required, students may elect to include a minor field of specialization, which must be approved by the student’s advisory-examining committee.

II. Total Units


Thesis: 30 graduate units.

Non-Thesis: 30 graduate units.
