Program Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

• identify major themes, theoretical or methodological frameworks, and debates within the historiography of a chosen field. 
• synthesize historical content and present it clearly in written work, oral presentations, or other formats. 
• apply historical thinking, research, and presentation skills to a variety of professional careers.

Admission Requirements

To pursue the certificate, the student must meet one of these requirements: a Bachelor’s degree in a humanities or social science; a bachelor’s degree in Education; or Teaching Credential.

Students pursuing the graduate certificate of Studies in History must satisfy all of the graduate school requirements  for admission as a Graduate Special. Students should read the History Department bulletin.

Undergraduates may pursue the certificate provided they are working on one of the degrees or credentials described above, and that they meet the requirements of the Graduate School, as stated in this catalog, for undergraduates taking graduate courses.

I. Program Requirements

• The completion of twelve units of graduate-level courses with a grade of at least a B is required.
• At least three units must be taken at the 700-level.
• Course selection will be determined in consultation with the Graduate Director.
• Students must notify the Graduate Director of The Department of History, in writing, of their intent to pursue the certificate.
