Science of Reading Parapro/Substitute Certification

The certificate in Science of Reading for Paraprofesionals and Substitute teachers is offered through the College of Education and Human Development. This certificate will provide foundational knowledge and skills in teaching. Students will be introduced to the main principles of education and will learn how to best serve the diverse student populations in classrooms. This certificate is appropriate for those who are already working in Nevada elementary schools but do not have a Bachelor’s degree and/or classes that prepare them to teach.

Program Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:
- Gain knowledge and skills required to teach in a K-12 school.
- Understand the premises of culturally responsive practices.
- Learn special education laws, including least restrictive environment, and how to create an inclusive environment for students with disabilities.
- Understand the principles of the Science of Reading.

Admission requirements
Admission Criteria include: 2.5 College GPA or 2.75 High School GPA, Two letters of recommendation from school personnel (Principal, Dean, Teacher), a purpose statement, and a resume/vita.
a. Summer Classes - Required (9 units)
These introductory classes will provide important foundational information to the students. Students must take all these classes.
b. Fall Classes - Required (9 units)
These classes will solidify students’ knowledge and skills. Students must take all these classes.
