Through the department’s skills-based curriculum, history students learn how to think and write like historians. History faculty teach students to think contextually, read historical documents, and become better researchers and writers.
The American history minor surveys United States history from before the colonial period to the twenty-first century. Specialized coursework includes courses in American social and cultural movements, diverse populations in U.S. history, and the history of the American West.

I. Program Requirements (18 units)
Students majoring in another field may minor in American history by completing the following requirements:
- Minor GPA | 2.0
- Minor Upper-Division Units | 9
- Minor Residency Requirement | 6 Upper-Division Units in the minor at UNR
- Unit Limits: Per College of Liberal Arts policy, no more than 9 units counted toward any major may be reused to meet the requirements of this minor.
A. Required Courses (6 units)
Complete both of the following:
B. American History Electives (12 units)
Complete at least 12 additional units in American History from the following courses. At least 9 of these units must be in upper-division courses numbered at the 300- or 400-level.
