PackTeach Secondary Education (Social Studies) and Journalism, B.A./B.A. in Ed.


Students who complete this Dual Degree Program will earn two degrees: The Bachelor of Arts in Education/Secondary Social Studies Education and the Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. This program provides students with a broad background in journalism and includes all coursework required to apply for a license to teach journalism in Nevada.  This also prepares students who successfully complete this program to teach secondary social studies. 

Program Learning Outcomes


Students will be able to:

  • demonstrate strong foundation of knowledge in teaching Social Studies and Secondary Education in 7-12 level in schools by developing detailed lesson plans and units that reflect social studies as a theory and as a practice paired with alternatives to the traditional approaches to curriculum development and implementation. (C)
  • demonstrate inclusive practices that include learners from diverse perspectives and learning styles that show an understanding of Social Studies and Secondary Education in both its concrete and abstract formats through problem-solving, creative analysis, and critical thinking skills to formulate alternative scenarios. (CT & QR)
  • demonstrate and apply the principles and laws of freedom of speech and press, including the right to dissent, to monitor and criticize power, and to assemble and petition for redress of grievances and demonstrate understanding and apply theories in the use of presentation of images and information and professional ethical principles and their historical development; and apply that knowledge to educational settings.
  • achieve a basic mastery and scholarly competence in the academic endeavors of Social Studies and Secondary Education.

Admission Requirements (Secondary Education)


To apply for admission to the Secondary Teacher Education program, students must have completed at least 30 credits of college coursework with a grade point average of no less than 2.75 (on a 4-point scale) and have completed EDU 202 or the equivalent with a grade of “C” (not “C-“) or better. The 30 credits must include core requirements in English, math, and the sciences (CO1-4). In addition, applicants must have passed all three parts of the Praxis Core Academic Skills test or passed all parts of the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST). The application for full admission can be found on the College of Education website.
