Donor Management and Transplantation Science Graduate Certificate (Online)

The Donor Management and Transplantation Science Certificate Program (DMTS) aims to train healthcare professionals in leadership, management, and coordination of the activities related to the organ donation and transplantation process. This multitasking process requires a good understanding of healthcare services, appropriate communication, an ethical approach, and clinical care.

The DMTS Certificate Program aims to prepare the students to become “Organ Procurement and Transplant Coordinators (OPTC)” who facilitate organ donation from beginning to end. The OPTCs act as a liaison person between the donor’s family, the organ procurement organization, and ultimately the transplantation team.

The students who complete the certificate program will become eligible for a certification process driven by the relevant professional organizations that are valid nationally.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Describe the organ donation and transplantation system and federal regulations.
  • Analyze and evaluate potential organ and tissue donors (through reviewing medical and social history, current medical condition, and infectious disease testing) to determine suitability for transplant.
  • Evaluate the donor using evaluation process and criteria.
  • Apply knowledge and skill to cultural norms, the healthcare system, grief, and loss.
  • Demonstrate effective communication with donor families, organ procurement organizations, transplantation teams, and others.
  • Apply ethical considerations in all stages of the organ donation and transplantation process.
  • Demonstrate effective leadership in all stages of the donor management process, from the beginning to after donation.
