Addiction Treatment Services, Minor (Online)

An 18-21 unit minor in addiction treatment services is available through the Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies (CASAT). All students are introduced to the field of addiction services via the overview courses of CAS 154  and CAS 255 . The Addiction Treatment Services minor is especially suited to students majoring in psychology, social work, criminal justice, human development and family studies, sociology, and nursing. An optional 3 credits of internship/practicum coursework is available for those students intending to pursue the state certification as an alcohol and drug abuse counselor.

Formal acceptance into the minor or certificate program is required in order for students to take coursework at the 300 or 400-level. An additional application process is required for acceptance into the practicum, CAS 464 . Applications are due by April 1 for the fall semester and November 1 for the spring semester. All applications are available through the CASAT office, online at http://casat.org or by calling the department.

Program Learning Outcomes


Students will be able to:

  • Understanding of Addiction Fundamentals: Explain the signs, symptoms, and underlying problems of substance abuse and addiction, including the physiological, psychological, and social factors involved.
  • Prevention and Intervention Strategies: Develop and evaluate effective substance abuse prevention strategies and intervention techniques that can be applied in various settings, including community, clinical, and justice system contexts.
  • Client Engagement Skills: Apply principles of screening and client engagement to establish rapport and build trust with individuals facing addiction challenges, utilizing ethical and culturally sensitive approaches.
  • Treatment Planning and Implementation: Formulate and implement evidence-based treatment plans for individuals and groups struggling with addiction, integrating theories of behavioral health and best practices in addiction treatment.
  • Assessment and Case Management: Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients with substance use disorders and effectively manage cases to coordinate services that support recovery and rehabilitation goals.

Admission Requirements


Applications for this undergraduate minor can be made at anytime after the successful completion of CAS 154   with a C or above. A minimum 2.5 GPA expected. (See https://casat.org/academic for application and instructions)
