Interpersonal and Family Communication, Minor

The Interpersonal and Family Communication minor helps students develop essential skills to navigate and enhance human relationships. Through coursework in interpersonal and family communication, relationship studies, and diversity, students gain a deeper understanding of personal and family dynamics. This 18-unit minor prepares students for careers in fields such as counseling, human resources, social work, and relationship coaching, as well as any profession where interpersonal skills are vital.

Program Learning Outcomes


Students will be able to: 

  • Demonstrate the ability to apply core principles of interpersonal communication research and theory.
  • Critically analyze and evaluate the complexities of interpersonal and family relationships.
  • Foster more inclusive, respectful, and effective interpersonal interactions in both personal and professional settings.

I. Program Requirements (18 units)


Students majoring in any field may minor in Interpersonal and Family Communication by completing the following:

  • Minor GPA | 2.0
  • Minor Upper-Division Units | 9
  • Minor Residency Requirement | 6 Upper-Division Units in the minor at UNR
  • Unit Limits:
    • Students must complete 9 units of COM coursework for this minor (with exception of HDFS majors or minors, who only need to complete 6 units of COM courses).
    • Students may only use a maximum of 12 total units of coursework from a specific department/discipline/subject prefix towards the requirements of this minor.
    • Per College of Liberal Arts policy, no more than 9 units counted toward any major may be reused to meet the requirements of this minor.

These two core courses offer a thorough introduction of introductory concepts related to interpersonal communication:

B. Diversity and Inclusion Requirement (3 units)


Students must also take one of the following courses that allows intense insight into intercultural interaction regarding interpersonal relationships and family:

C. Interpersonal Relationship and Family Electives (9 units)


Students will supplement the above coursework with classes that allow additional insight into interpersonal and family communication in a variety of contexts. Students must take three additional courses from the following list or courses from the Diversity and Inclusion Requirement list that were not used to fulfill that portion of the minor.
