Core Objective 11: Global Contexts

All students must satisfy CO11:

  • Core Objective 11: Global Contexts. Students will apply and evaluate modes of academic inquiry, creative expression, or results of research to problems in historical and contemporary global contexts. Students will articulate connections among local, national, and international contexts and evaluate the ways that historical and contemporary global influences affect their current situations.

This Core Objective can be satisfied by courses – or a sequence of courses – within the student’s major requirements or electives, and some General Education courses may also satisfy this objective. It cannot be satisfied by AP courses, higher-level International Baccalaureate exams, or credit by examination.

Students will critically reflect on their learning and life experiences in a global context and develop an understanding of different viewpoints on contemporary societies. Courses satisfying this objective will teach students to critically reflect on their learning and life experiences in a global context (e.g., non-U.S., comparative, or transnational) and comprehend different viewpoints on and contexts for contemporary culture, politics, and interactions. They may examine topics such as the history, cultures, economic systems, or political systems of nations other than the United States; international conflicts and their causes; colonialism and post-colonialism; and global phenomena that connect the fates of nations and regions.
