WMST 421 - Gender and Ethnicity in American Music (3 units) CO10, CO13, CO14 Influence of gender and ethnicity in American classical and popular music. Reading, listening and analysis. (MUS 421 and WMST 421 are cross-listed; credit may be earned in one of the two.)
Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing; MUS 121 or MUS 122 or MUS 341 or MUS 342 .

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. apply their knowledge of cultural studies, gender studies, and music studies to the analysis of specific pieces of music, both historical and contemporary. 2. discuss the cultural contexts of specific musical pieces and cultures. 3. synthesize complex arguments in written form. 4. demonstrate and apply empathy and cultural sensitivity to the study of diverse musical cultures. 5. examine and discuss the historical and cultural conditions under which a diverse range of music is made. 6. apply the study of diversity in historical contexts to the understanding of diversity in contemporary contexts. 7. develop and design appropriate steps and tasks to conduct a research project based on an original research question.
