AM 149 - American Sign Language V (4 units) This course provides an opportunity for students to expand their ASL skills acquired during levels 1-4 and to pursue greater fluency with the language. Students will incorporate more nuanced sentence structures into ASL narratives and implement the use of multiple character roles. They will further broaden their vocabulary base, and gain the language experience necessary to sign about sensitive topics like important moments, facts, rules, and personally significant events.

Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 4 Offered: Every Fall and Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate mastery of both expressive and receptive ASL discourse across a wide range of topics. 2. explain facts, rules, cultural behaviors, and issues surrounding Deaf Identity and sign language structure. 3. construct and implement high levels of spontaneous discourse using narratives, dialogues and descriptions in ASL. 4. comprehend sign language from an assortment of real-world signers, and employ strategies for facilitating communication with Deaf individuals in a variety of settings.
