AM 380 - Service Learning in American Sign Language (3 units) CO14 AM 380 provides engaged service-learning through volunteer opportunities with dDeaf students in local K-12 schools. Experiential learning paired with academic instruction will teach students how best to serve this unique population. This course will also examine the demographics of the dDeaf students in our area and help them identify a variety of signed communication systems. AM 380 requires critical reflection about, and emphasizes a deep respect for, marginalized populations.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. draw tangible connections between various signing systems and their use in public education. 2. use their American Sign Language skills and capacity for comprehension in real world settings. 3. describe communication options for dDeaf and hard of hearing students in WCSD. 4. explain the role of interpreters and other support staff in the classroom. 5. design and host an event for dDeaf students and their families in WCSD that is both culturally appropriate and engaging. 6. articulate their thoughts on the historical tensions related to dDeaf education.
